ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP
Adam, Jack and Ryan from AJR have announced a scholarship fund, in honor of their father Gary. Gary always supported his sons and their fans. This scholarship will be a series of $2500 awards, granted based on the merits of the applications. The money is intended to help support fans who are enrolled in school and pursuing creative endeavors. Gary always supported his sons and others chasing their dreams. He was an architect who understood the importance of creativity in life. Gary always loved speaking with the fans before an AJR show and hearing about their dreams and aspirations. Adam Jack and Ryan are excited to support fans in pursuit of their dreams just as Gary loved to do. Apply below.
A LETTER FROM GARY’S BROTHER
“Gary Metzger”, no words have instilled more fear in the hearts of men! Just kidding!
Creativity is not confined to the arts and Gary was the embodiment of that concept. Even as a young kid his ability to parse through difficult issues of family, school and friendship was always done by working hard and looking from a fresh perspective, often with answers that far surpassed his years. This coupled with a kind, funny, generous and empathetic nature was his calling card from then until his passing. To be fair this was in his DNA, passed down from Grandfather Charlie to dad Bernie and ultimately to his gift for the rest of us, AJR.
Gary could just as easily conceptualize a solution for working with the most difficult clients as he could for an architectural problem. Always consider the “problem” from another perspective. Challenges were viewed not as an obstacle but as an opportunity to make something better. Everyone he worked with and especially those he was able to mentor, got the best of his experience. Giving was just in his nature. It is a good way to live.
If you are reading this, you have most likely been to an AJR concert and if Gary was there you know they had no bigger fan. It wasn’t just pride in what they accomplished as performers and activists, but the way they have touched each and every one of you with their lyrics and music. In many ways he became a “Dad” to all of us through them, by infusing his values in Adam, Jack and Ryan and encouraging AJR to unleash this humanity out into your lives.
He loved to walk “the line” before each concert, talking with all of you and hearing your stories, hopes and dreams. It meant the world to him and he knew how much he was loved by all of you. I can think of no gift Gary would rather give than to bestow a scholarship in his name to allow you to make the world a better, caring, more thoughtful and creative place. Go do that then pass it on. It is important work.
Thank you Adam, Ryan and Jack.
Regards
Gary’s little brother, Jim
